Secret Sanctuary – Where's That Then?

We have yet another example of a young person setting up their own business in the town in response to the lack of traditional employment.

Location is important for a business so Rosie Howard has made a feature out of her hard-to-find massage centre, calling it "The Secret Sanctuary"

"Yes, I do get a lot of people ringing up to find out where we are," said Rosie, as the website enigmatically refers only to 'central Chipping Norton'. Rosie meets customers by the gate leading to her hidden hideaway.

Perhaps better known as one half of Jive Pony, the equestrian display team, or from her seven year stint behind the Chequers bar, Rosie gained her ITEC massage qualification a year ago. She has been doing home visits, and still does, but can now welcome people at her new treatment rooms.

"I love doing Jive Pony but it's very much a summer thing," Serena said, "and I needed something that could run all year round, something that could grow. And in Chippy, really you need to make that happen yourself."

Where There's a Weld There's a Way

Welding company Weldtec started up in the town taking over a unit in the corner of the Worcester Rd industrial estate. No ordinary welders, Simon Barker and Chris Jolly are skilled in joining all sorts of metals, having spent most of their working lives on large projects such as the wind tunnel at Honda F1 in Brackley.

The move to Chipping Norton was, as is often the case with businesses setting up in here, to improve their quality of life. The Brackley job was rare in that it was relatively close to home; both Simon and Chris seemed to be constantly away around the UK and abroad, for long periods.

Setting up in Chippy allows them to see more of their families and build up a business in one area. Their market research showed that there were few welding facilities in the area and early signs are that they were right, with work coming in before they'd finished kitting the unit out. There is all the equipment for high quality welding, including vacuum chambers which eradicate impurities in the joint.

"Our motto is 'excellence in welding and fabrication technology', said Simon. "We often come across people who call themselves welders but can only do one sort of welding. We can look at what the metals are and can use any welding method, whatever is best for the job."

Weldtec can be contacted on 01608 641660 and their website is www.weldtec-ltd.co.uk

Racing to Success

Chipping Norton has attracted another business to the area, this time from the field of horse racing.

Charlie Longsdon Racing is the racehorse training business set up by Charlie in 2006 in Gloucestershire and he is in the process of relocating to a farm between Great Rollright and Chipping Norton owned by point-to-point racing fans Chris and Fran Marriott.

Charlie is a well-respected up-and-coming young trainer who has so far notched up over £300,000 in prize money for his charges owners. His finest victory, and his proudest moment to date, was when jockey Tom Siddall rode Songe to victory in the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock in January 2009.

The current stable of 36 horses will go straight into the new facilities and there is room for up to 50 with the current layout. There are additional stables which can be refurbished ad extended when the time is right so Charlie has a scalable facility that will suit his expansion plans for some time to come. And there's room for a house to be built for him and his new wife Sophie too.
